Patrols beefed up for Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is one of the deadliest weekends on the road, and it's why law enforcement beefs up patrols, looking for speeders and impaired drivers.

It's a routine law enforcement go through every year, and still, there were arrests made for DUI, and officers are not surprised.

"We hear all kinds of excuses," said Sgt. Jon Meacham with Mesa Police.

The conversations were the same, as officers ask drivers if they had anything to drink, but the only thing new was the size and scope of East Valley's DUI checkpoint in Mesa.

"We have a lot of people here. I was very impressed with the response. We have several agencies working with us, and there's actually, probably about 15 officers that are not even on scene who were working with us, because they're out working the surrounding areas,"

Several agencies participated, and at the same place they are at every single year. As traffic started to increase on Power Road to wind down Memorial Day, the same story played out.

"Well, I only had two," recounted Sgt. Meacham. "People want to minimize how much alcohol they've had."

There's also no minimizing the fact that the cooler weather expected to play a big role.

"With the temperatures being lower, we did expect a bigger crowd," said Sgt. Meacham. "My understanding is yesterday, the lake and river were at capacity. I haven't checked today, I don't know where they're at, but I know they've had a very busy weekend."

A lot of traffic, and a lot of people who had plenty of choices on how to get home.

"You can call for a taxi. Uber and Lyft are very popular," said Sgt. Meacham. "You can request rideshare right from your phone, right to your location."
