Police: Man breaks into home of 16-year-old girl he assaulted, kills her father and friend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - The suspect in a deadly shooting at a south Charlotte home Sunday died at the hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Officers said the suspect, identified as John James Bocek, 23, knew a 16-year-old girl who lived at the south Charlotte home located near 11400 Glenn Abbey Way.

Detectives said Bocek forced his way into the house early Sunday morning and while inside fatally shot the 16-year-old girl's father, Matthew Allen Chaplin, 51, and Jenna Elizabeth Hewitt, a 15-year-old friend who was staying at the house for the night.

According to detectives, the 16-year-old girl was able to flee to a neighbor's home and call 911. She was not harmed during the incident, police said.

CMPD had warrants out for Bocek, charging him with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a crime that had happened at this same address last week. A police report confirms in the earlier incident, Bocek had reportedly assaulted the 16-year-old girl and taken her cell phone.

"The victim in that report didn't necessarily know where he was living. I think he had moved from his original location," said Maj. Cam Selvey from CMPD.

FOX 46 Charlotte found that Bocek was previously arrested in 2017 in Mecklenburg County for assaulting a female as well as breaking and entering. Dectectives from CMPD say Bocek was convicted and spent 45 days in jail for those crimes.
