Police: Shooter in murder-suicide at Independence H.S. got gun from a classmate
GLENDALE, Ariz. - Glendale Police say investigators have determined that one of the female students involved in last week's shooting at Independence High School received the gun from a friend.
On the morning of February 12th, officers found two 15-year-old students near the cafeteria under a covered patio on the campus. The teens had sustained single gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene.
Per officials, "During the processing of the scene, a suicide note was located. Information gathered by detectives reveal the two girls were very close friends, appearing to also be in a relationship. Detectives do not have any persons of interest and do not believe there are any outstanding suspects. The investigation has led detectives to believe this incident was a murder suicide."
Authorities explain how the suspect acquired a gun:
"The suspect approached a 15-year old classmate on Thursday, telling him she needed it for protection; she promised to return the gun on Friday. The classmate provided her a family owned handgun, from his home, without the permission or knowledge of his parents. He has spoken to detectives and was cooperative. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office will review his involvement in the matter. No further details can be provided about this aspect of the investigation."
