Police: siblings involved in fight prior to deadly shooting

Mesa Police say a fight between siblings ended with shots being fired and one of the two dead.

Officers were called to a home near 7500 E University just after 12:30 Sunday morning.

They found two people inside; one was shot. Rescue crews worked to save 24-year-old John Paul McAdam, but he died at the hospital.

The other man, 21-year-old Evan Mathew McAdam surrendered to police. He told officers he shot his older brother in self-defense.

Witnesses told Mesa Police that the pair had been fighting before a gunshot was heard. They also reported that the victim was walking away when he was shot.

Evan McAdam has been cooperating with investigators, but it's unknown why the siblings were fighting. He was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on one count of second-degree murder.
