Police: Victim shot shortly before crashing into apartment building

Police say a man was shot multiple times and ended up crashing his vehicle into an apartment where three people were sleeping inside near 27th Ave. and Camelback.

The three people were not hurt, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say they received calls about a shooting around 1:50 a.m. Monday. When officers arrived at the scene, they pulled the driver out of the vehicle for fear of the building's roof collapsing.

"At about 01:50 hours this morning, our officers responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls of shots being fired in the area of 27th Drive and Orange.. upon arrival, our officers found that there was a vehicle that was embedded in a smaller apartment at the end of the street. When they approached the car and went inside the apartment, they found that the driver had been the victim of a gunshot wound and he was later pronounced deceased at the scene," said a Lieutenant at the scene.

Only one apartment unit was damaged due to the crash.

Police are still searching for a suspect or suspects. No description has been released.

Officials say this shooting does appear to be random.
