Police: Woman hit, killed by oncoming car after exiting vehicle

Police say a woman has died after she got out of her vehicle and was struck by another car near a Mesa intersection.

Mesa police say the collision happened at about 4:00 a.m.Thursday, when the woman was traveling eastbound on University just east of Center.

According to police, the woman was driving a white pickup truck when she stopped her vehicle in the center lane and got out. The woman may have been trying to pick up a dead cat in the roadway, and was struck by another truck.

"The message for people who are in the roadway, if there is any reason to stop and be out of your vehicle, that's putting yourself in danger," said Mesa Police officials. "You shouldn't be in the roadway. The other people might not see you."

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died.

The investigation is ongoing and investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.
