Preliminary work begins on Loop 202, 22 mile extension to open in 2019

Preliminary construction work is about to get underway along the South Mountain freeway extension.

Crews will begin preparations along the Interstate 10 interchange. Drivers can expect some changes there and along Pecos Road for the morning commute.

The extension will connect the east and west valley areas following a route around South Mountain.

In the first phase, crews will widen the shoulders and extend the existing HOV lanes on the freeway.

Barriers are set to go up Monday night and the Arizona Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be ready for delays.

The freeway extension is expected to be completed by 2019.
