Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy remains in the hospital Sunday following a stroke this weekend, his office stated, adding that the 53-year-old Democrat is responding well to treatment.

Big picture view:

Murphy’s chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, explained that the senator started to feel numbness in his arm Saturday while attending his son’s hockey game. Herwitt explained that he went to a local hospital where doctors determined he had experienced a stroke.

What they're saying:

"The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery," Herwitt continued, noting that Murphy has since been transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital.
