Surprise police: Caretaker arrested, accused of child abuse

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a caretaker in Surprise is accused of felony child abuse for alleging twice throwing a toddler to the floor for crying and refusing to eat.

Surprise police say 36-year-old Lizette Yadira Moreno was arrested Wednesday after the 23-month-old boy she was caring for was found not breathing by emergency responders.

Police say the child remains on life support in critical condition.

Doctors say he suffered a serious brain injury from head trauma.

Police were summoned to the hospital and later talked to Moreno, who initially denied any abuse.

Court documents show Moreno later admitted to police that she got mad at the boy and threw him to the ground two times.

Bond was set at $200,000 at Moreno's initial court appearance Thursday.

She doesn't have a lawyer yet.
