Triple stabbing in Phoenix: One dead, two others hospitalized; suspect arrested
PHOENIX - A suspect was arrested after police say a triple stabbing broke out late Saturday night, resulting in one man's death.
The stabbing reportedly happened at a child's birthday party.
What we know:
The stabbing happened on Jan. 25 around 10 p.m. near Lower Buckeye Road and 75th Avenue, Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said.
"Officers found three adult victims all suffering from injuries consistent with a stabbing. All victims were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, one of which was not able to survive his injuries and died at the hospital," Sgt. Bower said.
The victim who died is Jake Carbonell, 29. A man and woman were treated at the hospital and released.
As for the suspect, police identified him as Hunter Strawbridge, 29.
Timeline:
Police explained a bit more about how Strawbridge was found to be connected to the stabbings.
As investigators were on scene and searching the neighborhood, they detained Strawbridge. Police say witnesses confirmed he was the suspect who stabbed the three victims.
He was booked into jail.
"It was learned that a fight between Carbonell and Strawbridge happened while at a family gathering and led to Strawbridge stabbing Carbonell. The other two victims were stabbed during this altercation and later treated and released from the hospital," Sgt. Bower said.
The backstory:
The victim's family told FOX 10 that Carbonell was a father of two young daughters.
At the scene, family members were taking balloons and birthday gift bags out of the house. They said they were celebrating their 2-year-old niece's birthday when the violent altercation happened.
The family says the three people stabbed were two brothers and their female cousin. They said their female cousin arrived with her boyfriend when things turned to chaos.
Dig deeper:
Strawbridge allegedly stabbed Carbonell when an argument turned into a physical confrontation at the party.
According to court documents, the argument stemmed from when Strawbridge waved a knife in one person's face and threatened to stab others at the party.
When Strawbridge was taken into custody, police say he was covered in blood stains.
Strawbridge is accused of second-degree murder and aggravated assault. He is being held on a $1 million cash bond.
