Valley high school robotics team heads to world championships

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - This is Little Shredder, a robot the Cactus High School robotics team created and are now headed to the world championships.

"We really simplified things, we worked really hard to get there, but we went back to basics, made everything simple to make everything work properly," Adam Shroyer said.

This is the first time in 16 years the high school has qualified to go to the world championships in St. Louis. There, they'll compete against 900 teams from 39 countries.

"We put more hours into this than anything I could imagine doing," Cody Young said.

Cody Young, the driver of the robot, says the robotics team creates a sense of community among his peers.

"Make people who are dedicated to science, tech, engineering mathematics, and really just develop good, hard-working people," he said.

After countless hours of hard work and many nights without sleep, the team is ready to compete against some of the best.

"I feel like we have a team of really dedicated people." Young said. "We pull really late nights and work really hard."

It's a zoo, but it's crazy because everyone is there for the same thing; to celebrate what they've done and all of their accomplishments and to really celebrate stem education and science and math," Shroyer said.
