Weekend event helps fight children's cancer

PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- With a great weekend in store, what better way to enjoy the great weather than to get out and help support children and families fighting the battle against cancer?

The Cancer Survivor's Walk takes place each March at Grand Canyon University, and it's a chance for children who've battled the disease to show they've beaten it. The event also helps support children and their families still fighting the disease.

Jennifer Hamblin, a mental health therapist at Phoenix Children's Hospital, said many people don't realize they often times suffer from PTSD.

"The flashbacks, the memories, the triggers, the difficulty of sleeping, the irritability, the avoidance of situations, or things that might remind them of situations or events," said Hamblin.

Ildi Laczko-Kerr knows all too well. Her daughter was diagnosed with cancer when she was in the 5th grade.

"Sometimes, she was afraid she was going to die, and sometimes, she wasn't sure if she wanted to go through treatment anymore," said Laczko-Kerr. "It was such a painful process."

The Children's Cancer Network teamed up with Phoenix Children's Hospital in order to hire specialists trained to deal with the emotions and fears surrounding cancer.

"It's amazingly rewarding and satisfying and challenging and a calling for me," said Hamblin. "It's emotional."
