Avondale robotics team seeks donations for competition

A group of students are hoping to represent Arizona at a world robotics competition next month in Louisville, Kentucky. But first they need some help to get there.

Some 4th and 6th graders at Centerra Mirage Stem Academy have qualified for the world's robotic competition next month in Kentucky.

"They'll be competing with teams from China, Australia, and England," said Corey McCoy.

Three teams of two students create a robot to play a game, in this case, shoot all of the balls in the goal basket.

"They have to know programming, they have to be very good at math, they have to do the measurements in order to put them into the coding to download to their robots," said McCoy.

Serenity Foreman says building robots started out as a hobby but then grew into much more than that.

"It gives you ideas, and it makes you think what kind of engineering would go into that, so it's more inspiring to see more robots and how they work," said Foreman.

24 students from Arizona are headed to Worlds where Sage Foreman says the competition gets tough.

"Our robot only shoots a little bit, we are trying to make some modifications right now, and we're coming up with really good ideas that will help us get way better at Worlds," said Sage Foreman.

But to get to Worlds, they need donations and sponsors.

"We're really hoping for sponsors," said Serenity Foreman.

It costs $1,500 per student to attend; a total of $9,000 is needed to send all three teams.

"We need sponsors because if we don't get sponsors, we won't be able to go," said Serenity.

Whichever team gets the most points within a minute is the winner.
