Bus strike day 3: Back to the negotiating table

PHOENIX (AP) -- A union representing numerous Phoenix bus drivers and a city-contracted transit company are returning to the negotiating table as a bus strike in the nation's sixth-largest city enters its third day.

Representatives for Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433 and Transdev say they plan to meet Sunday afternoon.

Union Secretary Michael Cornelius said in an email that Transdev officials told the union they are committed to staying until an agreement is reached.

The union called for a strike Friday after negotiations with a federal mediator broke down, disrupting service on 34 routes for thousands of people.

Seven routes are running but with delayed service.

Some of the issues of contention include bereavement time and a tiered payment system.

Transdev says the company gave a very generous offer in good faith.
