DeKalb County group helps single mothers with furniture in their homes

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - It isn't easy raising a family especially when you're alone with a few resources. But an organization in DeKalb County provides support to single mothers by providing them with furniture.

The profit is called Helping Oppressed Mothers Endure or H.O.M.E. Inc. Founder Carolyn Watson says her group helps transform people's lives by making their houses feel like homes.

"It's about dignity, integrity, and self-respect. It's about knowing somebody sees, knows and cares," Watson stresses. "From new beds to pots and pans...they need to not have to worry about choosing food over furniture month after month."

Alexis Barrett's family has benefited from H.O.M.E. Inc. The single mother of four told FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell her family had fallen on hard times when her toddler became sick. They had to move in September and couldn't afford to furnish their new place.

"Rent got behind when she went into the hospital..." Barrett said. "But now 'blessed' is the word." Watson's team gave Barrett's family a kitchen set, sofa, chairs and more. After receiving the gifts, Barrett says she's now looking forward to having gatherings at her home for the holidays. "People complain about way more things but just to have a roof over my head and furniture in my house and food to feed my kids that is enough," Barrett added.
