Designs for Granite Mountain Hotshots memorial approved
PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP/KSAZ) -- A proposed Granite Mountain Hotshots memorial is closer to reality with the approval of its conceptual design.
The Daily Courier reports that, to honor the 19 firefighters who were killed while battling a June 2013 wildfire in Yarnell, the memorial plans call for a white marble cross to be placed on each spot where a man fell.
Encircling the crosses will be 19 low walls, an alternative to a fenced gate that architect Bill Gauslow said would have been a little crude. He said the walls will discourage people from entering the site.
Interpretive materials will be placed in the parking lot, and the path to the memorial will be lined with individual markers for the firefighters.
Arizona State Parks Director Sue Black said it's expected that donations will mostly fund the $2 million project.
