Douglas unveils plan to fund education in Arizona
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Arizona Schools chief Diane Douglas has a plan to fund education that involves taking land from the federal government.
She met with state lawmakers on Monday to explain the plan. They're proposing that federal property in Arizona should be turned over to the state land trust, saying this would significantly increase, if not double the funds that would go to education through the state land trust.
"The land can either be sold and the proceeds go into the state land trust or it can be leased with the revenues going into the land trust," said Douglas. "In either case, it increases the principal of the land trust for our children for generations and generations to come."
But this type of plan would certainly wind up in the courts and could take years to decide that matter.
