DPS: Impairment suspected in multi-vehicle crash on Loop 101

There was a major backup on valley freeways Tuesday night after a crash involving multiple cars and up to 10 people were injured as a result.

The crash happened around 6:00 p.m., but the southbound lanes of Loop 101 at U.S. 60 remain closed until just about 9:15 p.m. At one point, traffic was backed up from Loop 202 all the way to U.S. 60.

Department of Public Safety troopers say the driver of a white pickup truck was allegedly speeding and passed cars on the shoulder between the HOV lane and the barrier wall.

"The pickup struck the barrier wall then drove back into the traffic lanes striking six other vehicles. One of those vehicles caught fire, burning completely. The male driver of the pickup and one other male subject were transported to the Chandler Regional Medical Center for treatment," stated DPS Trooper Quentin Mehr.

DPS says the collision is still under investigation and impairment is suspected.
