Family of 4 displaced after fire damages mobile home

MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A Mesa family is struggling to get their lives together after a fire damaged their mobile home early Friday morning near Greenfield and McKellips as they were sleeping.

The homeowner says she woke up around 3:00 a.m. to turn on a space heater and 30 minutes later, she smelled smoke and realized her home was on fire."

Firefighters say the home did not have a smoke detector.

The woman managed to get everyone out of the home in time. Her children are just 1, 3 and 5 years old. Sadly, their dog didn't make it.

The family lost everything and now they don't know what to do.

When crews arrived at the scene, the flames were 20 feet high. According to Battalion Chief Kevin Machue, two firefighters fell through the floor while they battled the blaze. The firefighters were not seriously injured.

The mobile home is a total loss.

"My heart is broken," said Brenda Leon, in Spanish. "My whole life is in there."

Overwhelmed with emotions, Leon's husband comforted her. He said he is simply thankful Brenda and their kids made it out safely.

Neighbors said they were shocked, after watching the family lose everything, within a matter of minutes.

"I saw the kid's face," said Yadira Perez. "He was so scared, and I just thought about my kids like -- it was sad."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
