Globe film on historic 1910 double murder hits Amazon Prime

Filmmakers bring Globe's history to life with a movie on the 1910 "Dog Bite Murders," now streaming on Amazon Prime.

We were there as filming began in 2023, telling a real-life Old West story about the so-called "Dog Bite Murders."

The backstory:

The writers and directors sat down to tell how it all began in 1910.

"There were two hunters that came to stay at that station while they hunted for deer," Clint Clarkson said. "And in the process of all that, the hunters stepped on the dog's tail of one of these men and kicked the dog because the dog bit him. And the next cavalry soldier who went AWOL, basically, got really upset, and it turned into a, you know, a big fight."

Eventually, the dog owners shot the men and fled, leading to one of the first car chases in Southwest history. FOX 10 was there as they started filming the chase in the car. Eventually, the fugitives were caught and executed in a style that is hard to imagine in modern times.

"Hey, there's going to be a hanging on, you know, this Sunday at 10," Gregory Shoemaker said. "You know, we invite you to come to the hanging of so-and-so. So everyone would put on their Sunday best. And if you visit the jail, the 1910 jail, you can go to today, it's ran kind of like a museum. Five bucks. You can walk every inch of the building."

Local perspective:

That last part is important, because it is all about Globe, the city of 1910 and the city of today. The film has won multiple awards, including Best Feature at the Show Low Film Festival, and it has also premiered on Amazon Prime for the whole world.

"It's kind of surreal because it all started. It was just going to be a five-minute thing," Shoemaker said.

"And yeah, now you're here, now you're on Prime," Clarkson said. "Yeah, it's exciting."

It is exciting for them, of course, but also for the whole city that has a history just waiting to be told on the silver screen.

"We joke that Globe was almost more crazy than Tombstone," Clarkson said. "It's just there was a really good writer that told a couple really good stories that happened out of there, and now it is what it is. So we'd like to bring that life and that tourism, and we'd like people to see this and go, ‘Oh, wow, I can go to that jail and I can check it out, and I can go to that train depot and check it out.’ We filmed a lot of the things there right in Globe. So we'd like to kind of increase that interest."
