I-17 reopens following multi-car crash

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Interstate 17 has reopened between Glendale and Northern after authorities say the freeway was shut down due to a multi-car crash.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash happened at around 2:30 a.m., along southbound I-17 near the Glendale Avenue exit. DPS officials believe two Mercedes were drag-racing when somehow, one of the cars involved lost control, and hit a white compact car next to it.

DPS says a woman, who was driving the white car, was ejected from her vehicle and taken to a hospital. Video taken by SkyFOX shows the car rolled and crumpled on the freeway. A truck was also hit in the crash, but the driver was not injured.

The driver of one of the Mercedes kept on going after the accident, and the driver of the other Mercedes got out after the accident and ran away on foot, leaving the car on the freeway.

So far, DPS has not provided any names, but troopers are looking for both drivers.

"When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is a great thing but can be deadly dangerous," said DPS Trooper Kameron Lee. "There is a lot of responsibility/ If you cannot understand that, you should not be driving"

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the freeway was reopened just after 9:30 a.m.
