In August, Montana saw its first snow of the season

A national park in Montana is battling a fire one one side, but adding snow to the other.

Much of the northeast remains in a heat advisory with temperatures expecting to skyrocket in the mid-90s this week. For Glacier National Park in Montana, the park saw snow on Monday with the National Weather Service even issuing winter weather advisories for parts of Montana and Wyoming. Snow amounts could reach up to four inches in higher elevations.

Firefighters battling the "Howe Ridge Fire" welcomed the wet weather. So far, that fire has burned more than 12,000 acres, and was only 12 percent contained as of Sunday night. The weather pattern was expected to limit the fire's growth. According to the Great Falls Tribune, there were 16 large fires burning 55,061 across Montana.

The snow is unusual for August, but it's not unheard of, said Scott Coulston, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Great Falls.

"It can be a shock to the system considering how warm and dry it's been overall for the last couple of weeks," Coulson explained to Great Falls Tribune.

The cool weather is not expected to last with temperatures reaching the 70s by Tuesday.
