Local food bank in need of turkeys

PHOENIX, Ariz. - With Thanksgiving just days away, St. Mary's Food Bank said it is thousands of turkeys short this year, but they are hoping that a big weekend push will get them to their turkey goal.

For 2016, the food bank is expecting to help more than 12,000 people, but the food bank is short between 5,000 to 6,000 turkeys.

"I think this is a year unlike any other," said Jerry Brown with St. Mary's Food Bank. "With the election, so much focus on that. Warm weather, we haven't felt seasonal yet. I think Thanksgiving has snuck up on people. This is a tough situation right now."

Currently, the goal is to get as many turkeys as possible by Monday, when St. Mary's will hold their annual holiday food distribution through Wednesday.

The food bank is holding a turkey drive on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., where people can drop off turkeys, fixings, and cash donations at 26 Albertsons and Safeway locations across the Valley, in addition to the two St. Mary's Food Bank locations.
