Maricopa board examines gaining more control over elections
PHOENIX (AP/KSAZ) -- You decided, but it took Maricopa County nearly two weeks to get the results in and now the county recorder's handling of elections is coming into question.
The Maricopa Board of Supervisors delegated most election duties over to the county Recorder's Office decades ago, but they may be trying to take them back.
The Republican chairman of the board, Steve Chucri sas they are launching a review. They're looking at the time it took to count ballots, emergency voting centers and long lines when polling stations didn't open on time during the primaries.
The board may go a step further and ask lawmakers to give supervisors more control in the future.
Recorder Adrian Fontes says in a statement that his office is preparing for the November 26 official canvass, and his "priority is the work at hand needed to finish out the election."
