PD identify suspects involved in shooting of Phoenix officer, bystander

Police have identified two suspects arrested in connection to the shooting of a Phoenix police officer in the eastern portion of the city.

Phoenix Police shut down Thomas Road just before 56th Street and set up a perimeter around the intersection to search for the suspects.

The 34-year-old police officer remains in critical condition at Scottsdale Osborn hospital with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and shoulder.

Police say the officer has served seven years with Phoenix Police Department.

The other victim, a 63-year-old Maricopa County Sheriff's posse member, is also in critical condition. He was injured while trying to help the officer.

The shooting stemmed from an armed robbery at an IHOP restaurant at 4400 E. Thomas Road. According to Martos, the officer and citizen were shot during the altercation -- with the officer's gun.

Martos adds that the area of 44th Street to 56th Street from Thomas to McDowell should be avoided during the search for the suspects involved in this case. All cars leaving the area were searched.

Roger Allen Sharp, 26 and David Lee Murray Jr., 36, were arrested.

Scottsdale Police officer David Pubins stated, "Prior to being arrested, one of the suspects forced entry into the home where he was eventually found in the back yard. The homeowner was not harmed as the suspect ran through the home."

Martos stated that there was a shelter for residents in the area between 56th Street to 64th Street from McDowell to Thomas during the search.

"This is a sad day and our prayers go out for the Phoenix Police officer and our posse member that's been with us for a few years.. 63-years-old, Vietnam veteran.. 82nd Airborne, tough guy and hoping that he pulls through," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

"Thoughts and prayers are going out first and foremost to those two individuals who are in that hospital fighting as hard as they can," said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton.

The Sheriff, Mayor and police are thanking that posse member who saw what was going on -- saw the officer in trouble, jumped in to help and then ended up getting shot himself. They said without that man helping out and being so brave, they don't know exactly how this situation might have ended.

Sharp faces charges of two counts of armed robbery, two counts of prohibited possessor, one count of unlawful flight, one count of resisting arrest, two counts of attempt to commit murder and two counts of burglary.

Murray Jr. faces two counts of armed robbery.
