Police: Armed man shot, killed by officers in Avondale

Police say a man armed with a weapon was shot and killed by officers in an Avondale neighborhood.

Avondale police say officers responded to a neighborhood near 111th and Amelia Avenues on Tuesday for reports of a suicidal threats. When officers arrived at the scene, they found 33-year-old Moises Balladares, who was threatening suicide.

Police say upon entering negotiations with Balladares, he produced a weapon and officers were forced to use deadly force.

Balladares was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Neighbors say Balladares served in Afghanistan, and suffered from PTSD. Police said Balladares' fiance called for help Tuesday night, because the man was acting suicidal. Neighbors who saw the deadly standoff unfold said officers tried to negotiate with Balladares for nearly two hours, as Balladares stood in the street, holding two firearms.

DPS is investigating the shooting.
