Police investigating officer involved shooting in Mesa
MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A man has been taken to the hospital in serious condition, following an officer involved shooting early Sunday morning.
According to Mesa Police detective Nik Rasheta, the incident happened at approximately 3:00 a.m., in the area of Main Street, just west of Alma School Road. According to Rasheta, a Mesa Police officer was heading west on Main Street in a fully marked patrol vehicle when an adult man ran into the street and blocked the patrol car.
The officer, according to Rasheta, gave the suspect verbal commands to get off the street, which the suspect ignored. The suspect, according to Rasheta, then aggressively approached as the office retreated backwards, giving commands and drawing his weapon. The suspect then, according to Rasheta, quickly charged the officer, causing him to fire his service weapon.
Detectives are investigating the incident.
