Safeway: Store destroyed in fire will not be rebuilt

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- A Safeway store that was destroyed in a massive fire three weeks ago will not be rebuilt, according to officials.

The store, located in the area of 35th Avenue and Northern in North Phoenix, was destroyed by a fire on July 11. No one was injured during the fire.

In a statement, officials said the decision was "extremely difficult" to make, and that the company had explored options for the location. Officials, however, said there are several stores in the area that can continue to serve the community, in addition to grocery delivery services.

Customers in the neighborhood, according to officials, will be mailed special promotional offers over the next month.
