Second Lady attended art therapy event during Phoenix visit

As Vice President Mike Pence visited Phoenix on Tuesday, his wife, Second Lady Karen Pence was also in town, where she was able to check out a unique type of therapy.

The Second Lady made a stop at PSA Art Awakenings in Downtown Phoenix, where she was able to sit in on an art therapy session, hear stories of recovery, and explain why she's so passionate about art.

At the center, therapists work with students who have mental health issues, using art. The art therapist will designate a topic, and then once the artists completes their work, they talk about it.

"It works to help them, to empower them, to help them find meaningful community activities, and it really does a world of difference," said Sara Marriott, CEO of PSA Behavioral Health.

The Second Lady is a former art teacher, and is now very passionate about art therapy. PSA is hoping she will help spread the word of its benefits, so programs can be offered to more people in need.

"The beauty of art is it allows you to express anything you've got," said David May, an art coordinator who is also a former student. "It allows you to express a bad day. It allows you to express a happy day. That's really what art is all about."
