Trump says he'll force Mexico to pay for border wall by freezing money transfers

After months of saying he would make Mexico to pay for a wall along the United States' southern border, Republican front-runner Donald Trump has finally outlined his plan for how, exactly, he would force Mexico to pay for the wall.

In a two-page memo first reported on by the Washington Post, Trump said that he would cut off the flow of money that immigrants living in the U.S. send home to Mexico - a move that would devastate the Mexican economy but could also have unintended negative consequences for both countries.

Trump said in his memo, entitled "Compelling Mexico to Pay for the Wall," that he would cut off a portion of the cash sent to Mexico through money transfers - also called remittances -under the USA Patriot Act anti-terrorism law. He would remove the hold if Mexico made "a one-time payment of $5-10 billion" which would be used to pay for his wall.

"It's an easy decision for Mexico," Trump said in the memo, adding that the majority of the nearly $25 billion sent to Mexico in remittances in 2015 comes from undocumented immigrants.
