Woman killed when cement truck rolls over onto car in Romulus

A woman was killed Friday morning when a cement mixer rolled on top of her car. Police say she may have cut the truck off, causing the crash.

Romulus police said the cement truck was going east on Van Born Road near Merriman Road when the woman cut in front of it. The driver lost control of the truck and it rolled over and on top of the car. The woman was killed.

Those that initially called first responders about the wreck were horrified by what they saw.

"I heard the car beeping, honking," said Faissal Bazzi, a gas station owner who called 911. "When I looked back the cement truck was on top of the car. The top of the car smashed in by the weight of the truck."

Other witnesses were equally disturbed.

"It was bad when rescue got here," said Ron Dhans, who heard the accident. "I didn't want to look, didn't want to take the chance of seeing what I knew was inevitable."

Police originally feared there were more people in the car but couldn't tell because the cement truck had smashed about 90% of the car. Once the cement truck was lifted, they discovered the woman was alone.

"The driver came right to me and told me the gal cut him off. He was in the right lane, she was in the left lane and turned right in front of him and he couldn't avoid it," Dhans said. "He slammed on the breaks and he jumped out right before the truck was rolling over."

The driver of the truck was not hurt. All lanes of Merriman and Van Born were shut down in the area.

Many say the intersection is known to be dangerous.

"It's bad. You always see an accident here."
