16-year-old dead, 18-year-old injured in Fairfield shooting near high school

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (BCN/KTVU) - Fairfield Police Department say a 16-year-old is dead and an 18-year-old is in critical condition after a "gun battle" between two groups broke out Friday evening.

Two suspects are in custody, according to police, but the incident prompted a nearby high school to go into lock down mode.

Police say just after 5 p.m. they received several calls of a possible shooting in the area of Bell Avenue and Washington Street.

As of 5:43 p.m., Armijo High School at 824 Washington St. was closed because of police activity at the location. Arriving officers said they determined there was a gun battle between two groups. The two shooting suspects were said to have fled the scene.

At an 8 p.m. news conference, Lieutenant Greg Hurlbut said one of the subjects fled to Armijo's gymnasium and was arrested there where as many as 500 students and family members were on lock down.

No firearms were recovered from the scene.

Police did not have identities for the two male shooting victims or for the two male suspects. They did not indicate if any of them were students at the high school.

The Fairfield Daily Republic reported the campus was locked down just before a Junior Varsity Football game was about to begin and that police were looking for a shooting suspect who may have gone inside the school.

KCRA's helicopter was over the scene and could see the football players and cheerleaders in outfits walking in the school's parking lot.

Police said they were able to locate and arrest both outstanding suspects from the shooting within an hour.

The school remains closed while police investigate.
