2 motorcyclists hospitalized after crash in Glendale

Police are investigating a motorcycle crash that happened early Friday morning near 43rd Avenue and Dunlap.

One rider suffered burns to over 50 percent of his body. He's listed in extremely critical condition and his injuries are considered life-threatening. The other rider was also hospitalized, but the extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

"It appears that the 44-year-old may have been slightly ahead of his 42-year-old friend and when he went to make the turn, he didn't realize where he was and caused the collision," said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

A gas cap popped off of one motorcycle's tank and as they went down, fuel spilled on the road and sparks ignited a fire.

Officials say a person driving by the scene just happened to have a fire extinguisher on hand and was able to help before firefighters arrived.

Police are investigating to see if drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

43rd Avenue will be closed between Dunlap and Peoria during the investigation. Travelers are advised to avoid the area.
