BCPD officials say 53-year-old Jeffrey Clair Cave of Kingman fired a weapon toward officers and a police officer was shot. Cave was also shot and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Dennis Gilbert, 57, was wounded in the shooting and remains hospitalized in serious, but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Detective Nicholas Schmitz, 27, and Gilbert are on administrative leave. Police say they both fired their weapons during the incident.

"Lieutenant James Brice, 58, had one bullet pass through his clothing; however, he was not injured. The officers involved were wearing tactical ballistic body armor and gear during the search warrant," stated BCPD's Emily Fromelt.

Fromelt added, "The firearm that Cave discharged at officers was not the stolen firearm. Cave was the only person at the residence at the time of the search warrant."

Authorities say it's protocol to have an outside agency investigate an officer-involved shooting incident and the Bullhead City Police Department will be handling the probe.
