Burn restrictions imposed for Phoenix
PHOENIX (AP) -- Government-imposed restrictions prohibit people in metro Phoenix from using wood-burning fireplaces and other open burning on Thursday and Friday.
State and Maricopa County officials said the no-burn restrictions are being imposed because of high levels of particulate pollution due to stagnant weather conditions and strong temperature inversions exacerbated by holiday celebrations.
The county Air Quality Department says children, adults with respiratory problems and other people extremely sensitive to high pollution levels should consider reducing prolonged exposure or heavy outdoor exertion.
Meanwhile, the state Department of Environmental Quality is urging businesses conducting dust-generating operations to be vigilant in their dust control measures.
The metro area didn't have burn restrictions on Christmas day for the first time in seven years.
