WALDORF, Md. - In a sign of support, deputies in Charles County greeted students as they returned to class on Tuesday.
The sheriff's office said it wanted to "show their support to students and let them know we care, especially after the tragic Florida shooting."
The gesture comes one week after authorities say 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida with an AR-15 and opened fire, killing 17 people.
The mass shooting has reignited the gun control debate and prompted calls to protect students in school.
