ESPN analyst Matt Miller offered an update Tuesday after being seriously injured last week in a Missouri car crash, saying that he suffered significant injuries and had his left arm amputated as the medical staff fought to save his life.
Big picture view:
Miller, 42, explained that he sustained multiple fractures and broken ribs, in addition to undergoing the life-saving amputation of his arm, after being airlifted to Mercy Hospital, in Joplin, Missouri, following the crash. His post expressed deep gratitude for the exceptional care he received from the doctors, nurses, and medical staff there.
What they're saying:
"I’m incredibly fortunate to be writing this," he wrote. "While I have a long road ahead, I’m focused on my recovery and taking things one day at a time."
"Thank you for the overwhelming support, prayers and kind messages — they have meant so much to me and my family during this time."
The backstory:
Miller did not provide details about the crash, but KOAM News reported that it happened outside of the town of Orogono, Missouri, shortly before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, when a semi collided with the Ford Bronco that Miller was driving.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report for that incident indicated that the semi driven by a 28-year-old Springfield, Missouri, man crossed the centerline of State Highway 96 and Miller attempted to avoid it before the two vehicles collided. Miller’s Bronco went off one side of the road before he veered back onto the highway and went off the other side.
