Fighter jet damaged during landing in Mesa

A retired fighter jet that was privately owned had an accident at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

It happened around 12:45 p.m. Thursday as the plane was landing.

Fire officials say the aircraft's front landing gear failed, and the nose of the plane skidded on the runway.

The 63-year-old pilot was able to escape without any injury.

Fire crews from Mesa Fire and Medical and Gilbert Fire and Rescue responded and extinguished the fire.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
