Fire at Gilbert condo complex under construction ruled arson

Investigators believe a huge fire at an apartment complex under construction in Gilbert last weekend was deliberately set.

Gilbert Police and Fire departments made that arson ruling Thursday with assistance from the Phoenix Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A reward of up to $30,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Saturday night's fire at the Via Sorento condominiums near Gilbert and Guadalupe Roads.

Authorities are looking for a person-of-interest in regards to Saturday's apartment fire. According to GFD, witnesses reported seeing a young male in a maroon Arizona State University sweatshirt and dark gym shorts in the area around the time of the fire.

Eight buildings were destroyed and damage estimates are in excess of $10 million.

Authorities also are asking for the public's help in identifying any details on the fire including witnesses, photographs or videos. If you have any information about this case, contact the Gilbert Police Department at (480) 503-6500.
