Flagstaff special ed teachers ordered to do more training

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - State education officials say special education teachers and providers at a Flagstaff school must receive more training or risk a loss in federal funding.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported Friday that the state Department of Education investigation found Flagstaff Unified School District has not been following parts of the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

The call for training is focused on DeMiguel Elementary School but the district will lose millions of dollars in federal funding if the corrective measures aren't taken.

District Student Support Services Director Diana Shaum says the district will comply with the state's orders.

The investigation was triggered by dozens of complaints filed by parents Dani Lawrence and Aaron Green.

The couple says their 7-year-old son's school Braille instruction stopped without notice.
