Ford issued a recall for more than 741,000 vehicles because of a transmission problem that could damage the park system, which may elevate the risk of a crash or injury.

In a recall report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that Ford is aware of 24 accusations of property damage and nine alleged injuries, with two of those being allegations of emotional injuries, related to the problem.

According to the NHTSA report, if transmission park system damage happens, the ability of the transmission park features to hold the vehicle if the parking brake is not applied may be affected. Unintended movement in "park" increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Which Ford vehicles were recalled?

Why you should care:

Ford’s recall affects certain model Ford F-150, Lincoln Aviator, Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition vehicles manufactured between 2018 and 2021.

Citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s report, The Associated Press noted that these affected vehicles may experience temporary engagement of their transmission "parking pawl while the vehicle is in motion.

Are repairs available for the recalled Ford vehicles?

What you can do:

Owners of the recalled Ford vehicles will be notified by mail and informed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their vehicle’s Powertrain Control Module with the latest software updates.

Moreover, owners can take the vehicles to their local dealership where a technician will inspect the vehicle’s transmission for park damage system and replace damaged transmission components as needed for free.

Anyone with questions or seeking more information about the recall can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
