Man arrested in death of pedestrian hit by stolen vehicle

PHOENIX (AP) - An 18-year-old Phoenix man has been arrested in the death of a pedestrian struck by a stolen vehicle whose driver was fleeing from police.

Police said Robert Lee Mitchell Jr. was arrested Monday after officers found him hiding near the accident scene. He was jailed on suspicion of felony first-degree murder, hit-and-run with death or injury and other crimes.

The victim was identified as 33-year-old Guadalupe Roman Valdez. Police said he was on the side of a road in a residential area when struck.

Mitchell remained jailed Friday in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Efforts to contact an attorney to comment on allegations against Mitchell were unsuccessful because the Maricopa County Legal Defender's Office said it hadn't yet received paperwork for the case or assigned an attorney to represent Mitchell.
