Man dies in garage explosion in Surprise

A man died after an explosion inside a garage at a home in Surprise on Sunday.

Surprise police say the explosion happened at a home near Litchfield and Greenway Roads while the man was inside his garage.

First responders say the man suffered "extreme injuries" to his limbs and torso. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Three children were inside the home at the time of the explosion, however, none of them were injured.

Investigators say there were chemicals inside the home, but they are not sure if those chemicals caused the explosion.

Due to the explosion, nearby homes were evacuated and some neighbors said they thought the explosion was an earthquake.

Investigators and explosive technicians spent hours inside the garage to make sure the structure was safe after the explosion.

The explosion remains under investigation.
