MCSO identifies suspect in deputy shooting
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Authorities have identified the man suspected of shooting a sheriff's deputy and then taking his own life.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has identified 51-year-old Robert Walesa as the suspect in the shooting.
MCSO says Walesa shot Deputy Bryan Wisda during a traffic stop on the morning of May 7.
Deputy Wisda was operating a DUI patrol when another vehicle drove by and opened fire on him. He was shot in the leg and released from the hospital on Monday.
On Wednesday, Sheriff Joe Arpaio say detectives tracked Walesa to a Tempe apartment where he committed suicide when detectives tried to question him about the shooting of Deputy Wisda.
Arpaio also said Walesa had been arrested for drunken driving but was released from custody four hours before the shooting on Saturday morning.
MCSO believes Walesa carried out the shooting to get back at authorities for his arrest.
