Mesa officers injured while rescuing woman from burning home

Two Mesa police officers were injured Saturday evening when they broke into a burning home to rescue an elderly woman.

Forest Smith with the Mesa Fire Department says were assisted by Gilbert Fire officials in knocking down a house fire at a home near Lindsey Road and Brown Road.

Paramedics soon learned that a woman was trapped inside a home. That's when a neighbor and off-duty Buckeye firefighter attempted to rescue the woman who was unconscious on a couch inside the home.

Crews struggled to get into the home because of heavy smoke coming from the blaze, but they finally made it inside and were successful in getting the woman out of the house.

She was breathing, but unconscious, so paramedics transported her to the hospital.

The Mesa police officers were also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.

Fire investigators are currently on scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.
