Phoenix City Council to vote on Sanctuary City petition within 15 days

The debate over Sanctuary Cities, or cities where immigrants are not prosecuted for violating Federal immigration laws, is coming to Phoenix.

On Wednesday, a petition was submitted to the Phoenix City Council, with an aim to designate the city as a Sanctuary City.

The petition sets off a two-step process. Within 15 days, Phoenix City Council must decide whether or not they want to take up the issue. Should the council take up the issue, another vote will be held afterwards.

This debate over Sanctuary Cities came, amidst a vow by Donald Trump to cut off millions of dollars in Federal funds to cities that protect undocumented immigrants.

One City Council member has already expressed his opposition to the petition. Councilmember Sal DiCiccio, who represents District 6, expressed his opposition on his Twitter page.
