Police investigate shooting of Avondale teen

Crime scene tape surrounded a home after a young man was shot, initially in critical condition, his condition is now listed as stable.

"All I heard was the sirens, I just tried to wave it off and go to bed," said Andrew Giron.

Police arrived and found a 19-year-old young man shot, and an 18-year-old man who pulled the trigger. Avondale say the two were looking at a handgun, picking it up and handling it, when it went off. All of this took place in the home filled with children, some of them were quite young.

"Well they seem like a nice family, never any problems, my oldest son was friends with the dad, they would hang out with the dad," said Yvonne Smith.

At this point Avondale Police say the shooting was an accident, the 18-year-old was booked on charges of disorderly conduct involving weapons, a misdemeanor.

It's a grim reminder that mishandling guns can be a deadly mistake, something neighbors say they understand.

"Definitely it is not something to be taken lightly, you must be serious, always treat it as if it could be loaded, it's not a toy it's a loaded weapon," said Giron.

No names have been released by Avondale Police.
