Police: Street-racing may have led to crash, power outage

PEORIA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Police say street-racing may have led to a car crashing into a power pole and causing a power outage in Peoria.

Lance Ritchie says it was just after 2 a.m. when the commotion started.

"I saw the flash outside, I saw two flashes... they were six-seven seconds apart," he said.

He went outside and saw a car smash into a power pole, and the people who were in that car made a run for it.

"It was already neighbors making reports, looked like some kids got out of that car, got picked up by a black Ford," he said.

Peoria police believe the white Dodge was street-racing when the driver lost control and hit the pole, knocking out power to more than 1,500 customers.

"The passenger of the vehicle ended up coming back to the scene," Officer Mitch Fuller said. "Once the passenger got here, we were able to get some initial information on possibly who the driver is. All we have at this point is a first name."

The majority of power was restored by late morning, as crews worked into the early afternoon to finish the rest of the job. Meanwhile, people who live near the crash say they'll probably worry a little more that this could happen again.

"Especially being on a corner lot, we could have somebody come through our wall that's driving recklessly, so it is a concern for sure," Ritchie said.
