Stanton announces support for 3 team stadium

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton gave his state of the city address Tuesday, touching on a lot of topics. And for downtown Phoenix residents the Mayor touched on the news that Fry's would be building a grocery store near Cityscape and the Collier Center on an existing parking lot between Washington and Jefferson.

The City of Phoenix says the 55,000 square foot grocery store would include residential units and office space; the store should open in 2018.

Mayor Stanton announced his support for a new home to the Suns, Mercury, and the Coyotes.

"I as Mayor will do everything I can to pursue a course that makes a new facility home to the Suns, Mercury, and the Coyotes," said Mayor Greg Stanton.

Stanton says the Suns Management has recently talked about looking for a new home, and he wants to do everything he can to keep the team in town.

"We've made difficult decisions, and there are more on the horizon including the future of professional sports in downtown Phoenix," said Stanton.

The idea of having three major sports teams all playing under one roof is one a lot of Valley sports fan say makes sense.

"I think that's great, I think that will be a lot more convenient for everyone," said one resident.

Stanton vowed not to raise taxes to pay for the new arena.

"I will absolutely not raise taxes for a new arena, any plan for a new venue must use the existing sports facilities fund," he said.
