Store owner arrested in connection with "Cash for Food Stamp Card" scheme

PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- A Valley store owner is accused of giving out cash, in exchange for food stamp cards.

The investigation into the scheme, according to court documents, has been ongoing for nearly three years, after a detective was tipped off that a store, Carnisseria Hacienda Narvarro in Peoria, was buying EBT cards and paying 60% cash value for the SNAP benefits. It resulted in the arrest of 59-year-old Sergio Navarro Gonzalez.

From October to December 2018, undercover detectives exchanged $2,192.58 in SNAP benefits for $1,425 in cash. Five of the seven exchanges were done by the store owner.
